When it comes to remodeling, I love to look at all the options for upgrading the kitchen. After all, this space really is the heart of the home! From the sensible to the sensational, the ideas are endless.
If you’re like me, you also love to take a peek at the plethora of luxurious options. In the kitchen, that can mean stone countertops or high-end appliances or custom cabinetry. While it may not all be in your budget, there are plenty of ways to adapt these ideas to give your home a lavish look.
The folks at Home Stratosphere did an analysis of 415,000 kitchen designs and determined that approximately 14 percent of kitchens fall into what they considered to be the luxury category.
They also found these were the most common design styles for luxury kitchens:
- Traditional kitchens, featuring classic design elements and architectural features: 26 percent.
- Contemporary kitchens, with their more sleek and modern feel: 24 percent.
- Transitional kitchens, which blend old and new design elements: 18 percent.
So what makes a kitchen luxurious? Many of the same details you probably have in your home — just very high-end:
- Islands — They’re big, they’re chock full of features, and sometimes there’s more than one.
- Counter tops — They’re typically granite or marble.
- Cabinets — They’re custom-made, plentiful and can extend to the ceiling.
- Flooring — It’s hardwood or tile.
- Appliances — They’re almost always stainless steel, and they can range all the way up to professional quality.
Luxury kitchens also can incorporate special details to suit the needs or tastes of the homeowner.
The coffee aficionado might want space for a dedicated coffee bar or espresso maker — a live-in barista!
Those who love to throw parties might want their kitchen to include a wine refrigerator, an extra sink or a warming drawer.
The organized home cook could incorporate creative storage and pantry design to use every nook and cranny of space, for everything from spice jars to pan lids.
A family with young children might put a premium on extra space at the island or kitchen table for the kids to do homework while the parents make dinner.
And for the gourmet cook, the sky’s the limit when it comes to professional appliances or restaurant-quality amenities that can be adapted to home use.
How to Add Luxurious Details
Maybe you don’t have the budget for an extravagant kitchen. But you can add carefully curated details that give your home a luxurious feel.
“Think about how you use the kitchen, and put your money there,” says Ellen Rady, a designer in Cleveland, Ohio.
When it comes to deciding where to splurge and where to save, the final decision will depend on your specific needs. There are trade-offs to consider on all the big-ticket items, including appliances, countertops, cabinets and flooring.
The choices you make also depend on why you’re remodeling. Are you adding space for a growing family, or adapting to an empty nest, or planning for a family event? All entail different considerations.
And there are clever shortcuts that save you time and money. You can add smaller details — such as a new faucet, colorful backsplash or cabinet hardware — to instantly make a big impact with a smaller budget.
Finally, don’t be afraid to put in a little of your own elbow grease to save some money on any project.
“If you’re strategic with the planning, especially if you’re willing to put in a little sweat equity, there are definite simple fixes that you can make,” says Dan DiClerico, a home expert at HomeAdvisor.
